Hitekani Primary School Guarding Service
🛡️ Community Protection Project: Safeguarding Schools, Protecting Futures
In times of crisis, true leadership and community spirit shine through. Following the unrest and looting that affected communities across Gauteng and KZN, schools were left vulnerable to theft and vandalism. For many learners, schools are not just places of education but also safe havens—spaces of stability, hope, and opportunity.
Recognizing this urgent need, the PortiaMoroe Foundation, under the leadership of Ms. Thandi More, mobilized a Community Volunteer Task Team to step in where help was needed most.
💪 Standing Guard at No Cost
Community members approached local schools, offering to guard the premises during the night at no cost. One such initiative was welcomed at Hitekani Primary School, where both the principal and the School Governing Body (SGB) endorsed the idea. Their letter of support confirms:
“We have been approached by community members under the leadership of Ms. Thandi More. The purpose of their visit was to request permission to guard our school during the night at no cost. The idea was supported by the S.G.B.”
This act of service ensured that schools could remain safe, reducing the risk of further damage and giving parents, teachers, and learners peace of mind.
🤝 Community Unity in Action
The unrest prompted many schools to look for additional support. In another powerful endorsement, a school SGB Chairperson wrote:
“The Community Volunteer Task Team approached the school after the looting experienced by all of us in the country. The uncertainty of secured schools and the looted schools in Gauteng and KZN prompted the team to organize themselves with the aim of securing and protecting our school. The SGB appreciates the initiative and welcomes their assistance.”
This recognition demonstrates how volunteers, working hand in hand with school leadership, became a protective shield for education during one of the country’s most uncertain times.
